MLB All Star Game Information

Tickets for the MLB All Star Game can be hard to come by for the Average Joe. Tickets are first offered to the host team's season ticket holders, and then to the season ticket holders of the rest of the teams in the country. After that, corporations and other groups are offered tickets, and if any are left, a lottery is held through the host city. Popularly known as the "Midsummer Classic", the MLB All Star Game is an annual exhibition game played between members of the American and National leagues. Starting position players for both teams are elected by baseball fans, who are given ballots distributed at mid-season games. Pitchers and back-up players are chosen by the other players, and managers are decided by who won the previous year's league championship.

The venue in which the game is played traditionally alternates between the two leagues. Major League Baseball chooses the venue, and cities with newer parks or those who have not hosted the game in a long time usually get the nod. The home team is considered the league in which the host city resides. Consequently, the designated hitter rule is also based on the league in which the host city resides. If the home team is an American League team, both teams will apply the designated hitter rule. If the home team is a National League team, both teams' pitchers must step up to the plate to bat.

Since 2003, the winning league of the All Star Game has received home-field advantage for the World Series. This has raised the stakes for the managers and players involved, and has made the game that much more exciting.
